Vietnam's logistics industry in severe need of labour

According to Vietnam Logistics Institute (VNLI), there are about 300,000 business entrepreneurs involving in logistics services in Vietnam while only 40 per cent of the sector’s demand for labour is met - reports VietNamNet Bridge.

The inappropriate attention for logistics education and training over the past years has led to the current severe shortage of logistics labour, especially high-skilled workers.  This has inhibited industries from expanding the service to meet the increasing demand

Vietnam’s logistics sector, though is in the early stage of development, has seen impressive increase in the demand thanks to the continued inflow of foreign direct investment since its integration in the the World Trade Organisation. 

Ho Chi Minh City, as the business centre, is the major hub in need of the service. 

HCMC University of Transport and the Vietnam Maritime University both have opened logistics faculties.  However, they are facing increasing obstacles to improve the quality of training due to a lack of experienced lecturers.

UK institutions with longstanding experience in logistics training and service may want to explore with local institutions for partnership opportunities in the logistics area, including capacity building for academics. Government scholarship programmes may be mobilised as a source of funding for the training.
