The University of Colombo has improved its position climbing 146 positions in the recent Webometric ranking web of universities index. The university now is the only Sri Lankan university to be listed in the top 2000 universities in the world.

This also suggests that the University of Colombo is positioned in the upper 17 percent of all the higher educational institutions in the world that were evaluated by the Webometric ranking.

The University of Colombo in keeping with this momentum is working towards research capacity development and hopes to set up its own virtual Research Promotion Centre and Research Publication unit. The university is also looking towards developing academic research writing and development opportunities.
