UGC is taking steps to introduce new subjects for Indian students that directly relate to current employment opportunities, trends and India’s developmental initiatives. The UGC has directed all Indian universities to introduce a new subject on urban planning from the current academic year. This UGC directive comes in conjunction with the implementation of the Smart Cities Mission by the central government.  

The fact that most municipal bodies in India do not have urban planners is a cause for concern. Municipal bodies should develop a cadre of urban planners and managers. There should also be an on-going skill upgradation programme for municipal staff," said the South Asia Regional Director of the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), Shreya Gadepalli. There are few institutions in India which produce competent urban planners. This step will help mitigate the shortage," she added.

With upcoming job opportunities for Indian youth in this sector – UK institutions have an opportunity to showcase and market their courses in Urban planning. There will be a clear demand for these courses in the near future as India will need people with this skill set. UK institutions may promote their courses with support from the British Council’s digital and direct marketing services.
