UK commits trade and development to Bangladesh

UK and Bangladesh have a long history of trade and development ties, mostly through setting up business in the UK, sourcing products or services from the UK or Bangladesh, import and export ties among others.

In an article published recently in Bangladesh press by Alison Blake, British High Commissioner to Bangladesh and Jane Edmondson, Head of Office, DFID Bangladesh, the UK government commits to protect existing trading relationships, keep prices in check and help in to build trading partners for the future.

The commitment will continue to benefit Bangladesh by duty-free exports into the UK on all goods other than arms and ammunition, known as ‘everything but arms’.

Access to the UK markets of developed countries created vital trading opportunities for the mass labour market of Bangladesh. For example, 2 million women work in Bangladesh’s garment sector, which is a significant exporter of clothing to the UK.

In 2015, the UK imported 34 million dresses from Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.

Currently around two hundred UK firms are registered in Bangladesh which share expertise and introduce specialist products and services to various sectors including education.
