The UGC and AICTE in India to be replaced by a single higher education regulator

The Indian government is determined to change the India education scenario and sync the education regulatory bodies together. In yet another effort to do so the government is all set to scrap the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and replace them with a single higher education regulator, tentatively christened Higher Education Empowerment Regulation Agency (HEERA).

This decision of replacing the UGC and AICTE with a one regulatory body was taken after the Prime Minister himself chaired a meeting in March 2017. The HRD ministry along with Niti Aayog are working together to get the framework right. The new single law hopes to be short and is outcome oriented.

UGC is the regulatory body for non-technical education while AICTE is the governing body for technical courses in India, and the single regulatory body is expected to bring synergy and advancement by involving global practices in the education frame work in India.
