Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2016, have two Pakistani universities on their list this year.

Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad (QAU) ranked at 101 whereas National University of Science and Technology (NUST) stood at 121 under the Times Higher Education 200 Asian institutions category.

The Times Higher Education’s criteria for selecting a university is based on their teaching methods, research, knowledge transfer and international linkages.

According to the rankings, India is the strongest South Asian country in the rankings with eight universities among the top 100 and 16 varsities among the top 200 while Pakistan and Bangladesh have only three institutions between them.

Sharing his views on the ranking, Jamil Salmi, the earlier coordinator of the World Bank’s tertiary education programme, said that there was further scope for the enhancement of the region’s institutions. He added that Pakistan had an exceptional start in the 2000s, with considerable improvements and higher levels of funding.

The British Council agrees South Asian universities needed to improve the sector while raising the standards of provision as well as ensure quality assurance mechanisms.
