Chulalongkorn University (CU), Thailand has last week signed an agreement with the country’s leading operators to cover the campus with Wi-Fi hotspots, allowing general public to have better access to high-speed Internet across the campus.

The project called WiFi4CU will see the installation of an additional 800 hotspots— on top of the existing 800 Wi-Fi locations in the campus — provided by private operators — AIS, DTAC, True, and state-owned TOT.

“The WiFi4CU is an important milestone in bringing CU to become digital university,” said Professor Pirom Kamolratanakul, President, Office of the University, CU.

He added that more access to Internet will enhance the use of ICT in education, research, and the university’s administration system. It will bring with it the opportunity to allow teachers to transfer knowledge onto the network where students can leverage it before entering the classroom.

The new installation is expected to be completed within three months, and will allow general public to access Internet from their choice of operators. Currently, the Wi-Fi service in the CU’s facility is restricted only to its faculty, students and staff who have the university’s Internet user account, and the service is available mainly inside the building, according to Professor Kamolratanakul.

Located in the heart of Bangkok, the CU is the first university in the country founded by the King Rama V, and one of the leading academic institutes. It has nearly 40,000 students and over 8,000 staff.
