In the recent Asia University Rankings announced by Times Higher Education, Taiwan had 17 institutions in the top 100 list, second to Japan in terms of the overall country representation.

"It is an underestimated system," says Simon Marginson, professor of higher education at the University of Melbourne. "The country has 23 million people, Western European levels of per capita income, and has led the world in electronic engineering and computing - industrial strengths mirrored in the research profiles of its leading universities"

The best performing institution is National Taiwan University, ranked at 14. 10 out of the 12 member institutions of the Taiwan Top University Alliance made it to the top 100 list, and the strong commitment to international development of a number of prestigious private institutions was also reflected in their performance in the ranking, reported United Daily.
