Survey shows that Chinese students are becoming more wary of studying in the US

A survey recently reported in the China Daily shows that Chinese students are increasingly wary of studying in the US. Among 54 high school counsellors, 87 per cent said that parents had concerns about coming the the US - mainly related to policies towards Chinese students, safety, uncertainty over post-study work rights, and visa restrictions. Counsellors stated that other countries such as the UK, Canada and Australia were becoming increasingly competitive.

Analysis by Kevin Prest, Senior Analyst, British Council International Education Services

Although the US still remains the top country for Chinese overseas students, it is becoming comparatively less attractive due to the current China-US trade war and widely-reported statements that appear unwelcoming to Chinese students. Many US universities have commented on difficulty attracting Chinese students or declining applicant numbers compared to previous years.

Difficulties in the US may present opportunities for the UK, however. As of 30 June this year, the number of Chinese applicants for UK undergraduate courses through UCAS had increased by 30 per cent compared to the same point in 2018.
