Sri Lanka trials 5G in South Asia

Sri Lanka once again exhibited its dominance as the regional hub in South Asia for telecommunications with Dialog Axiata, its largest private telecommunications provider establishing 5G technology for the first time in South Asia. This will pave way for next generation wireless connectivity with speeds exceeding 35 Gbps.

The trial will set a strong infrastructure for the future development of the country’s broadband connectivity to a technology generation ahead that of other counties in South Asia. This will allow innovations in robotics, remote surgery, autonomous transport, digital business solutions and next generation entertainment.

In June 2017, Sri Lanka was the first country in the region to launch 4.5G technology and previously in 2013 became the first country to inaugurate commercial operations of mobile 4G-LTE services and introduced 3G to the region in 2006.

The government of Sri Lanka has identified Telecommunication and Digital infrastructure as two of the key areas that would define the country’s future and has since then set up plans on creating a digitally empowered nation; a vision they hope to achieve by 2020.
