Sri Lanka: Ministry of Higher Education to provide hostels for all university students

Implementing a 2016 budgetary proposal, under the standardisation of universities, the Ministry of Higher Education has launched a project titled ‘Hostels for all the university students’ with an aim of offering hostel facilities to all university students by the end of 2018.

This project will include constructing of 24 hostels in order to provide accommodation for 9,600 students. In Phase 1 of this project 60 hostels were constructed which provided accommodation facilities to 24,000 students.

Universities to receive these hostels include, University of Sri Jayawardenapaura, University of Colombo, Wayamba University, Ruhuna University, University of Jaffna, South Eastern University, Eastern University and Rajarata University in order to accommodate new entrants to the technological faculties. A total of Rs. 13.4 billion has been allocated for this project that is set to be completed in 2018.

The ‘hostels for all university students’ project is part of the efforts undertaken by the Ministry of Higher Education to enhance the quality of the higher education sector in Sri Lanka and moving towards their vision of transforming Sri Lanka to be an international hub of excellence for higher education by 2020.
