Six Pakistani universities rank among the top 800 universities in the world as per the latest released QS rankings. The rankings show a slight dip this year as all the universities are ranked below the top 500 grade.

The Pakistani universities as included in the universities ranking list of QS are:

• National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Islamabad
• Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad
• Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Lahore
• University of Engineering & Technology (UET), Lahore
• University of Karachi (UOK), Karachi
• The University of Lahore (UOL), Lahore

National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) achieved top rank for Pakistani universities ranked amongst 501– 550 in the world universities ranking, down from 401 in 2012–13 and 481 last year. Presently NUST is ranked at 119th in Asia. Second to NUST, Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad achieved the 651– 700 position ranking. Though with a lower QS ranking, it ranks higher than NUST in the Asian rankings at 116.

The rest of the four universities rank above 701 and below 800 places in this order; Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), University of Engineering & Technology (UET) Lahore, University of Karachi, The University of Lahore (UOL).

LUMS comes 161st in Asia with the rest ranked amongst 251– 300. In the world universities ranking of 2012 – 13, all these universities ranked amongst 610 – 650 and since then, there has been a decrease in ranking with a drop of more than 100 places. With the universities of Pakistan charting progressive trends in ranking until 2012 –13, the government and Higher Education Commission (HEC) need to establish opportunities to improve ranking status for the next year.

Trans-national education (TNE) is a growing market in Pakistan and recent data shows evidence of over 40 such programs running successfully in affiliation with British universities at undergraduate and graduate level, according to the  British Council. Overall, the UK takes about 65 per cent of the TNE market in Pakistan, at a clear majority.
