The Indian general elections, 2014 were held to constitute the 16th Lok Sabha, electing members of parliament for all 543 parliamentary constituencies of India.

Running in nine phases from 7 April to 12 May 2014, these were the longest election in the country's history.
According to the Election Commission of India, 814.5 million people were eligible to vote, with an increase of 100 million voters since the last general election in 2009, making it the largest-ever election in the world.

The BJP won 282 seats, enough for a majority in its own right. BJP leader Narendra Modi took office on 26 May at the helm of the largest majority government since 1984 and was sworn as the 15th Prime Minister of India. He has also served as Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014.
The Indian Prime Minister has appointed Mrs. Smriti Irani as Minister of Human Resource Development. The BJP manifesto on Education promises 'equality of opportunity in access and success' to all learners; greater use of technology in education; focus on job creation and entrepreneurship. In her first public comments she repeated the BJP’s manifesto commitment to increase public spending on education to 6% of GDP and undertook to review legislation on education that stalled during the last Parliament.

Smriti Irani is an Indian politician and former television actress and producer. At 38, she is the youngest cabinet minister. She has a reputation for being sharp and capable. Her appointment has sparked controversy around her incomplete university degree. She has come a long way from being a Miss India contestant to winning Modi’s trust to lead one of the key Ministries in his new government.
Irani joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2003. In 2010, Irani was appointed as the National Secretary of the party and in August 2011, she was sworn in as a Member of Parliament from Gujarat to the Upper House of Parliament. Irani contested the 2014 general elections in the constituency of the Indian National Congress' Vice President, Rahul Gandhi, and lost by a small margin.
