Governments of 10 states and union territories have supported the idea of allowing foreign universities to setup campuses in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently met with top bureaucrats from state governments to discuss the possibility of having foreign universities setup their campuses in India.  The HRD Ministry has given 33 consultation themes to the state governments for their feedback. One of the themes is about ’internationalisation of education’ which asked for views on allowing foreign universities to setup off-shore campuses.  10 out of 17 states support allowing foreign education providers in the country. The states that have supported the idea are Haryana, Maharashtra, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Tripura, Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Telangana.

Currently the issue is part of the bigger discussion about the new education policy that will be unveiled soon. This could be a potential opportunity for UK institutions.
