Moratorium for new medical courses to be extended

The Health Ministry had asked the Education Ministry to extend the moratorium for new medical courses for another 5 years as the current ban (which began in May 2011) will expire on 30 April. It was also reported that the backlog on housemanship placements is growing longer with graduates waiting between 6-12 months before getting posts. Medical graduates are required to complete a 2-year training in public hospitals in order to be registered with the Malaysian Medical Council.

comments by June Lo, Manager Education, British Council Malaysia:
With moratorium extended and medicine being a popular subject locally, affordable students (and parents) will continue to consider or look to send their children overseas. However, the Ministries are looking at ways to deal with issue of placement and excess supply. We will continue to monitor coming announcement(s) on the moratorium as well as any measures put in place by the ministries on matters pertaining to medical graduates.
