Malaysian government relaxes travel restrictions to allow UK international students taking mobility, edu-tourism programmes to enter Malaysia

The Malaysian government has said that international students from United Kingdom, enrolled in mobility and edu-tourism programmes, will be allowed to return to Malaysia, along with their dependents.

The Minister for Higher Education announced that the relaxation will be applicable for three categories of students:

  • Students from United Kingdom whose admission was previously blocked
  • International students who are pursuing mobility and edu-tourism programmes
  • Legal dependents of international students wishing to bring their families into Malaysia

The international students returning to Malaysia are required to have completed their vaccination and they must be registered with Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) before receiving approval from the Immigration Department to enter the country. The students must under-go the polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test three days prior to entering Malaysia. This will be followed by a health screening on arrival and students will be required to complete the quarantine period at designated locations.

Comments by British Council:

The relaxation for students from United Kingdom is important as this will support UK students and UK higher education institutions taking part in the Turing Scheme as well as others who have secured places at Malaysian institutions in the coming academic year, as institutions are preparing and set to open from October 2021.

This is an important step in the stages of Malaysia introducing relaxations as per the National Recovery Plan. The Ministry of Higher Education had earlier announced that fully vaccinated international students will be allowed to return to Malaysia in stages from 15 October onwards. Respective Malaysian higher education institutions will be coordinating the movement and health screenings for incoming international students and staff.

The British Council team is working closely with relevant authorities to avoid possible confusion or delays. All updates and any changes will be reflected and updated on our website as soon as announced.
