Six out of nine districts in Selangor, Malaysia, have been placed under Movement Control Order (MCO) from 6 May till 17 May 2021. The six districts are Hulu Langat, Petaling, Gombak, Klang, Kuala Langat and Sepang – with no inter-state travel allowed.  

The MCO places bans and restrictions at varying levels across different districts and states. Hari Raya falls under the MCO period and strict restrictions have been announced with specific SOPs for Hari Raya-Eid  prayers, gatherings and celebrations.  There is a ban on social activities and dine-ins at restaurants.  State authorities will announce decisions regarding Hari Raya/Eid prayers at mosques. The size of gatherings at home for Hari Raya is limited to 15 family members depending on size of the house and SOPS including scanning and checking of body temperature. Hari Raya celebrations and feasts at mosques are also banned in all locations under the MCO.

Malaysia has seen a rapid increase in Covid-19 case numbers since March and April. This has also coincided with the re-opening of schools across the country, with several clusters being related to schools. The month of Ramadhan also sees an increase in bazaars and gatherings. Though there are strict SOPs and measures in place, the numbers have been increasing at a fast pace and new infections are now recorded at 3000 plus daily. Schools in several states were ordered to be closed to curb the spread of the pandemic among students and school staff. While all schools have been ordered to revert to online virtual teaching and learning for a period of two weeks immediately after the Eid break to further contain the spread of infection, the schools in Selangor are closed from today.

Further announcements from the government are expected and will be shared as soon as announced.

Malaysian education institutions, exam schedules and results have been impacted severely by the ripple effects of the pandemic.

UK institutions are advised to continue exercising increased flexibility in terms of requirements and documentation when analysing applications with due considerations to the disrupted academic year the students continue to experience.
