The Indonesia Directorate General of Higher Education (DIKTI), has launched the Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards 2021 (IISMA). This student mobility initiative will be delivered in partnership with 73 universities around the world, 12 of these institutions are UK higher education institutions.  These include:

  • Heriot-Watt University
  • Lancaster University
  • Newcastle University
  • The University of Edinburgh
  • University College London
  • University of Birmingham
  • University of Glasgow
  • University of Leeds
  • University of Leicester
  • University of Strathclyde
  • University of Sussex
  • University of York

The IISMA initiative is a scholarship program that aims to mobilise 1,000 undergraduate students from Indonesia to spend semesters at overseas universities in 2021/22. Successful applicants will join a partner university to study, experience different cultures and expand their international network. The opportunity to apply for the IISMA programme is open for undergraduate students from all Indonesian higher education institutions registered under DIKTI.

This is a pilot programme and the Ministry plan to continue this on an annual basis.

Comments by British Council:

The IISMA mobility scheme is a much-awaited pilot initiative. The Indonesian education authorities had announced extensive plans to expand international education and mobility programmes in January 2020. The plans were delayed due to the ripple effects of the pandemic.

Recent announcements for the IISMA initiative and Indonesian scholarships are a positive indicator of plans getting back on schedule. It is great to note that UK has the highest number of partner institutions for IISMA. Currently, student applications are in process and are at interview stage. Successful student applicants will proceed to join universities around the world from September 2021 onwards, subject to travel conditions.

The Indonesian government is keen and committed to facilitating international academic exchange for students, academics, and professionals. The IISMA initiative is expected to grow and expand on an annual basis.
