The Indonesian government has opened registrations for the 2021 Education Fund Management Institution (LPDP) scholarships for 2021. Indonesian LPDP scholarships will fund postgraduate scholars for international Masters and Doctoral degrees. LPDP opened online registrations on 4 May for the following two categories:

• Regular LPDP Scholarship Programme
• LPDP Scholarship for Major World Universities (PTUD)

The scholarship recipients will receive funding for tuition fee and support costs for one-degree masters with a maximum study duration of 24 months and single doctoral degrees with a maximum study duration of 48 months. The funding covers tuition fee, book allowance, thesis/dissertation research costs, international seminar fee, international journal publication fee, transport, visa/permit, monthly living expenses, health, emergency costs (if required) and family allowance (for doctoral applicants only).

LPDP is offering two phases of the registration/application as per following timelines.

Registration schedule of First Phase LPDP Scholarship Selection 2021:

• General scholarship registration opening: 4 May 2021
• Closing of general scholarship applications: 1 June 2021

Registration schedule of Second Phase LPDP Scholarship Registration and Selection 2021:

• Registration opening: 1 August 2021
• Registration closing: 8 September 2021

This is a much welcome announcement by the Indonesian government. LPDP scholarships have been anxiously awaited by prospective post graduate international students. The opening of the LPDP scholarships was extensively delayed due to the pandemic last year.

Financial constraint being a major challenge for conversion of applicants, initial immediate feedback is that offer holders are delighted at the announcement and looking forward to the funding so as to proceed with their higher education plans internationally. The LPDP scholarships have stringent criteria and are awarded to applicants applying to or accepted at institutions listed on the government approved LPDP lists. These can be viewed at:

All feedback from Indonesian agents and student influencers re-iterated the need for scholarships to accelerate conversion as one of the main challenges, along with clarity on provision of /access to health and well being services. While LPDP scholarships are much awaited and will provide relief to applicants/offer holders, we do strongly recommend UK institutions to strengthen Indonesia specific messaging about available scholarships, finance assistance for accommodation and flexibility for costs and payment plans. Indonesian students also respond positively to messaging involving Indonesian alumni success stories. Current Indonesian student experience at UK campuses, delivered in Bahasa, will gain more traction and engagement.
