Indian Government refuses to recognise one year UK Master's degree

The UK government has presented a proposal for the recognition of the UK’s one-year master’s degree by the Indian government, to the Union HRD ministry following an agreement for degree recognition for a Master’s programme between India and France.  Prime Minister Modi was on a three-country tour to Europe (including the UK) which would open avenues for bilateral meetings to include discussions for mutual benefit on several areas including education.

The Centre has once again decided to refuse the proposal. The official at the ministry state that a formal communication has not yet been sent to the UK government, however it would in a few weeks’ time.

This may have an impact on the perceptions across the student and parent communities in India. We will need to keep track of how this decision will affect student mobility numbers to the UK, if at all. The ministry did highlight the fact that while France agreed to recognise the India schooling programme with a 12-year duration even as it had a 13-year-old schooling, the UK has not offered any such exchange. It would be key for the UK government to keep the dialogue open with the Indian government for the recognition issue so students can make the most of the UK’s excellent international higher education offer.
