Incoming president recognises the British Council Mexico and remarks his interest in increasing mobility to the UK

Last month the Mexican president-elect Enrique Peña Nieto visited the UK and had a meeting with David Cameron and Nick Clegg. Afterwards he gave a speech in which he recognised the labour of the British Council: "We also need to highlight the great cooperation and collaboration with the British Council on the training and preparation of teachers of English. Currently we have a programme in Mexico that -with the collaboration of the British Government and with the British Council in particular- trains over 7,000 teachers. For that reason - during my conversations with the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister - I have been particularly emphatic about the desire and interest we have in widening the collaboration in Education and finding more opportunities for Mexican students to study in the UK.”

This time last year The British Council Mexico secured in-year ODA funding to pilot a cascade-teacher programme. We have trained 11,000 teachers (in the President-Elect's former State) and secured sponsorship from HSBC and the global media channel Televisa.  We are using additional ODA funding this year to start the project in 3 more states. Thanks to this project we are now well placed to deliver a major reform programme for the new Government and increase the presence of UK Education in the country.
