An article by the South China Morning Post provides useful background into the provision of the IB curriculum in Hong Kong, in comparison to the local Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE).

As covered in the article, English Schools Foundation (ESF) schools, which comprise a significant proportion of the international schools in Hong Kong, started to replace A-Levels with the IB in 2007. Direct Subsidy Scheme (DSS) schools, a form of local school, are permitted to have up to 50% of students taking the IB curriculum. Each school would be granted a different percentage by the Education Bureau (EDB).

In 2014 there were approximately 1,800 IB graduates in Hong Kong, compared with 79,500 HKDSE graduates, however a far higher proportion of IB graduates would be seeking overseas education.
