HRD ministry forms committee to ensure more students are retained in India

In an effort to ensure that more students study in India and also to support students who could not pursue their studies abroad and those who had to return home due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has set up a committee to form guidelines and suggest measures for a smooth transition for students returning from abroad.

To facilitate this the ministry plans to work on mechanisms to explore multi-disciplinary and innovative programs, twinning and joint degree programs, cross-country designing of centres, facilitating online lectures by eminent faculty abroad, linkage between academia and industry to start with. This will appeal to prospective students and mould them into future leaders in their industry of choice.

The aim is to try and retain these students by providing quality education through Indian premier institutions. This will require increasing seat capacity by 50 per cent in all premier institutions and number of Institutions of Eminence to 50 by 2024.

The committee should submit a report soon.
