In response to the recent rebound of the epidemic situation in the UK and the widespread Delta variant virus strain there, the Hong Kong Government announced on June 28, from 0.00am on July 1 (Hong Kong time), all passenger flights from the UK will be prohibited from landing in Hong Kong. Hong Kong also classified the UK as an extremely high-risk area, to stop people who have stayed in the country for more than two hours from flying to the SAR.

The last flight ban was in place from December to May and had been lifted less than two months ago.

Starting from 1st July 2021, the passenger flights from the UK to Hong Kong will be suspended until further notice, while the passenger flights from Hong Kong to the UK will not be affected.

It is very likely that students from Hong Kong will need to stay in the UK throughout the summer break, therefore UK institutions and schools should closely monitor the situation and make necessary arrangements to support students who are unable to return home this summer. In particular, parents whose children are currently studying in UK boarding schools will likely seek more support from schools on safeguarding their children's health and well-being, and accommodation arrangement during the holidays. 

Besides, foreseeing the challenges the graduating cohort will encounter during the flight suspension, the institutions should look at what support and resources are available for these students while they are stranded in the UK.
