The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has appointed a panel of experts to review the higher education institutions across the country. This quality review is to ensure universities’ adherence to policies and practices that meet the required quality assurance criteria and good governance.

Complying with the directive of the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, HEC Chairman Prof Dr Mukhtar Ahmad and a number of academic experts and quality practitioners from across the country have so far reviewed quality assurance and governance mechanism of 100 universities with 50 more on their review list, including both public and private sector.

The completion date of the review phase is estimated by the end of March 2016.

This initiative, being carried out under the auspices of HEC’s Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), aims to not only improve quality of teaching and research in the universities, but will also sensitise the higher learning institutions to contribute to the socio-economic priorities of the country.

Trans-national education (TNE) is a growing market in Pakistan and recent data shows evidence of over 40 such programs running successfully in affiliation with British universities at undergraduate and graduate level, according to the  British Council. Overall, the UK takes about 65 per cent of the TNE market in Pakistan, at a clear majority.
