Greece - national examination results 2020

Despite all the odds caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and consequent lockdown, Greek students wishing to access tertiary education sat the national (pan-hellenic) examinations in June 2020. Therefore, awarded grades reflect the students’ actual performance in the examinations and not coursework and predictions. Last Friday, the Greek Ministry of Education released the results. Please find attached the performance results for 2020. It is interesting reading to view the overall students’ performance as well as the percentage of students in each grade range. Similar statistics from the last couple of years are also included to provide means of comparison.

Please let me remind you that the school leaving certificate, the Apolytirion, does NOT include the student’s performance at the national examinations.

• Students under performed in the Greek Language and Literature examination compared to previous years. Grades between 18 and 20 obtained only by the 0.39% of the candidates (1.34% in 2019 and 0.85% in 2018).
• It was the first time that students were examined in Sociology which replaced Latin.
• Performance in Mathematics and Physics was improved compared to last year; Chemistry recorded lower results.
• Only 15.21% of the students examined in Biology were graded between 18 and 20 (28.14% in 2019)

Key dates – Students are required to submit their course preferences for access to Greek universities, by Friday 17 July and final acceptances will be announced after the second week in August.
