Government Strategy to Develop Human Resource by Increasing Research Funding

One of the mainstays programmes of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) is the development of human resources (HR) through the key element of research. Research activities aimed to develop HR and have impact for Indonesia’s development in various fields.

Running this programme, government have various strategies including increasing 1.3% research budget and actively cooperate with third party or foreign countries to initiate collaborative research. One such collaboration is the Newton Fund, which is the result of cooperation between Indonesia and the United Kingdom.

Commitment and collaborative research program from government could benefit third parties such as UK higher education. It is also believed that there will be a growing opportunity for collaboration partnerships with UK institutions, particularly in relation to establishing new collaboration research between the UK and Indonesia higher education institutions. Collaborative research could be formed to support priority government programmes in the areas of renewable energy, information technology, maritime technology, disaster mitigation, pharmacy, agriculture, defence and security, art and culture, transportation technology, and developing new materials.

Besides collaborative research, UK institutions could focus on the further promotion of courses in relation to priority programmes, especially for potential students applying for government scholarships such as LPDP. LPDP is the biggest funding available for scholarship in Indonesia which some of awardees are civil servants running priority programmes.
