Under the Pakistan Federal Government plans for 2016 -2017, 10 new universities will be established across several provinces in Pakistan which include Gilgit Baltistan, Bannu, Bahawalpur, Dera Ismail Khan and Balochistan.

The universities will be established under the Government Sector Development Program Fund, with the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan leading on the structuring of the 10 universities in the country.

Baltistan region currently has only one degree awarding institution since 2002, which is the Karakoram International University and the University of Baltistan will be an addition under the new plan.

The province of Balochistan will welcome two new universities, the University of Sibi and the University of Gwadar increasing the total number of the universities in that region to 10.

In 2017, the National Skills University, the Federal Women University, and the University of Central Asia and Pakistan would be set up in Islamabad, the Capital of Pakistan.

Bahawalpur itself will see a rise in the number of universities; these will include Bahawalpur Institute of Science and Technology, an engineering university similar to the National University of Science and Technology and the University of Engineering Technology.

Under the plans, there will be an Agricultural University in Dera Ismail Khan, a federal university in Hyderabad, Sindh and last but not least, the sub - campus of the University of Science and Technology, Bannu will be upgraded to a full-fledged university.
