Government announces new National Education Policy (NEP) implementation timeline

On 19 September the ministry has announced an implementation timeline for the National Education Policy (NEP). It has identified 300 tasks to be carried out in the next five years to ensure implementation of the new policy, which covers early childhood education and functional literacy and numeracy to mother tongue as a medium for education and revamped teacher training.

By 2021 National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is expected to prepare a National Curriculum Framework for Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE), for school and adult education. The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) are to adapt and adopt this new curriculum at the State level by 2022. Both these agencies will redesign textbooks between 2021 to 2024 in three phrases.

  • Board reform by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to be completed by 2025-2026.
  • By 2022 the new teacher training curriculum will be developed by the National Council for Teacher Education.
  • Implementation of mother tongue language as medium of instruction up to class 5, will be carried out in selected areas first.
