The future of Bangladesh’s education sector could spell opportunity for UK Institutions – a commentary on the future of higher education in Bangladesh by researcher and teacher Md. Shamsul Islam

Bangladesh has now become a growing market for promoting higher studies offered by overseas institutions. Not only are online courses (MOOC) becoming popular here, but students are rushing towards getting a certificate or diploma course from their local institutions offered by foreign universities.

Higher education institutions around the world are taking these opportunities to promote their courses as well. Local higher education institutions are mushrooming while trying to adopt new technologies and teaching methods to fulfill the demand of the students. Public universities are also facing challenges to meet the requirement of the students and are finding it difficult to compare their curriculum with foreign universities.

The standard of the local higher education institutions are falling and failing to grab the interest of local students. “In a more recent report, The Economist observed that education quality is low in universities in South Asia and employers have mentioned two types of skills shortages: (a) not enough graduates in specialised skills needed within high growth sectors, and (b) where graduates have these skills, they are still not employable because skills in English language, computer, communication and problem-solving abilities are absent.”

These circumstances have led Bangladeshi students to often choose international higher education institutions over local ones thus offering international higher education institutions the opportunity to promote their courses in Bangladesh. Bangladeshi students are also preferring international destinations as their chosen place of study.

How can UK Institutions make the most of this opportunity and develop its offer for Bangladeshi students? With UK as one of the most popular international destinations amongst these students, it is important to look at the massive opportunity this country offers for international student recruitment.
