Recently eight UK universities were removed from Singapore Ministry of Law’s accredited law school list for admission to the Singapore bar. This leaves 11 UK universities on the list of institutions recognised, along with 17 institutions from other countries. The decision on which universities to remove was based on subject league tables.

According to the Singapore Law Society the removal is due to an over-supply of graduates. Law is the most popular subject for Singaporean students studying in the UK, with numbers rapidly increasing in recent years.

The change has been described as protectionism of graduates of local institutions according to some lawyers (source: University World News), and the UK institutions affected have expressed disappointment.
