Education Bureau announces scholarship scheme for Hong Kong students studying abroad

The Hong Kong Education Bureau has announced the details of a new scholarship scheme for Hong Kong students studying abroad, to be known as Scholarship for Excellence (not to be confused with a British Council managed programme of the same name that provides scholarships for British students studying in Hong Kong).

The scheme will provide scholarships for up to 100 students, starting with the 2015/16 academic year, and for two subsequent years (and will then be reviewed).

Features of the scheme include:

  • For students to study in “world renowned universities”, as defined by appearing in the top 100 of any of the following rankings – QS, Shanghai Jiaotong, Times Higher Education, US News and World Report.
  • Students can list up to three universities and programmes in their application and must demonstrate that they have already applied
  • Applications are open immediately, and close on January 31. Shortlisted applicants chosen for an interview are notified by June.
  • Selection will be based on academic achievement, with other consideration factors such as commitment to society and  career plan after graduation.
  • Applicants wishing to study programmes in fields that are needed by the Hong Kong economy or those not available in Hong Kong might have an advantage.
  • Priority will be given to students from needy families who otherwise would not be able to afford overseas study.
  • The award will include two components – a) a non-means tested scholarship plus b) a means tested bursary. The bursary will then include two components, for tuition fees and living costs.
  • Once awarded a scholarship will cover the length of the students’ programme.

Full details of the scheme can be found here.
