Credit transfer system aids ASEAN students

Members of the ASEAN University Network (AUN) debated the expansion of the credit transfer system at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels among AUN member and non-member universities.

The AUN aims to bring its members’ education standards towards to international level.

By February 2015, 1,518 credit transfer programmes had been implemented within the network.

AUN put forward an initiative to build up a pool of scholarships for students as part of its efforts to ensure sustainable operation of the network's credit transfer system.

Member universities from Vietnam and the number of programmes meeting the AUN Quality Assurance System standards are as follows (*):

  • VNU Hanoi – 15 programmes
  • HCMC – 7 programmes
  • Tho University – 3 programmes in Biotechnology, Aquaculture and Agricultural Economics

British Council commentary

The AUN credit transfer mechanism offers wider options for students wishing to obtain qualifications at international or regional standards in Vietnam’s neighbouring countries which are closer in terms of culture and geographical proximity, and thus cost saving opportunity. This means increased competition for UK institutions in student recruitment, but at the same time presents opportunities for those having campuses in ASEAN countries.
