Colleges will no longer see which other schools the applicant listed on the FAFSA

When completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the student is asked to list all the colleges and universities which he/she wishes to receive his/her FAFSA information. Those institutions will then get the “FAFSA list” along with the student’s financial information. Due to concerns from high school counsellors that some institutions are using the list in an attempt to ascertain the students’ likelihood of attending the institution if accepted, the US Department of Education has proposed sharing the list with the student’s state agency but not with the individual universities. This means the admissions staff will no longer know what other institutions a student is applying to in addition to their university.
