The British Council International Education Services (IES) proudly hosted the first workshop of the 'Up Close and Personal' series on 24th October 2018 in Edinburgh.

The aim of the workshop was not only to develop and enhance knowledge on supporting international students, but also to stimulate discussions. Using the ProtectED Code of Practice as a guide, the day focused on the five most important issues which follow the international student journey: from selecting an UK institution, through student experiences whilst studying at their chosen institution including pre-arrival to the UK, arrival, international student orientation, awareness of fraudulent scams and visa compliance issues affecting study.

Over the course of the day, the personal format allowed specially invited speakers and education providers to share best practice in student welfare with range of institutions. Directed by Helen Clews, specialist Immigration Adviser for the British Council said:

"Student Welfare in large part is about the strengthening the knowledge of our international students' safety, security and wellbeing. It is clearly evident that the participants learnt a lot, but also contributed much from which we can all learn. Our engagement with the education providers led to some very positive conversations. This is the start of a great journey for us all."

Attendees gained valuable insight into trends and opportunities moving forward and found sessions such as 'Navigation Enrolment' and 'Happy Apping' particularly effective.  “It is an honour to be chosen to host such an important event and we are delighted to be part of what is a vital and significant discussion” continued Helen.
