Chinese Education Minister Yuan Guiren stresses the importance of art education

In the recent speech, Chinese Education Minister Yuan Guiren stressed the significance of developing art education and highlighted 5 key factors for improving the art education sector in China, including curriculum development, innovative forms of extra-curricular activities, teacher training and an integrated platform for resource sharing, joint training delivered by art institutions and enterprises, and improving evaluation standards for art education, especially in primary and secondary schools.

Analysis by Liu Xiaoxiao, Education Service Manager and Kevin Prest, Senior Analyst:

Echoing Chinese President Xi Jinping’s remarks on art and culture development in China, the Minister’s speech has further clarified the broad policy direction in art education. Under the favourable policy environment and a fast growing student market in art and design learning, UK institutions with high profile in art education could consider playing a greater role in entering into TNE partnerships with local institutions, providing teacher training and introducing more industry-oriented courses in order to equip students with knowledge of running their own business after graduation. Art and design is one of the fastest-growing subject fields among Chinese students coming to the UK, with the number of enrolments increasing by 177 per cent over the last five years.
