Cabinet approves Bangladesh Accreditation Council Act 2016 to ensure education quality in the HE sector

The cabinet has approved a law with a provision that no university would be able to offer certificates without the approval of a council to be formed by the government.

The approval of Bangladesh Accreditation Council Act-2016 came at a weekly cabinet meeting at the Cabinet Division of the Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

A chairman will lead the 13-member council, cabinet secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam briefed reporters after the meeting.

The accreditation of an educational institution will be scrapped if it misinforms or conceals information from the council, according to the law.

The Accreditation body will assess the quality of higher education provided by the public and private universities. This will help in the close monitoring of HE institutions in Bangladesh, which will help in improving the quality of higher education in Bangladesh and help HEIs maintain a international standards.
