Bangladesh to receive $510m from World Bank to improve secondary education

Bangladesh has an impressive track record for growth and development, aspiring to be a middle-income country by its 50th birthday in 2021. The World Bank has supported Bangladesh since 1972, providing more than $15 billion in support.

On 13 August 2018, Bangladesh Government signed a USD 510 million financing agreement with the World Bank. The grant will be utilised to enhance the quality and effectiveness of secondary education platform of the country, which will benefit 13 million students studying in Grades 6-12.

The Transforming Secondary Education for Results (TSER) programme will support the government’s Secondary Education Development Programme (SEDP).

The programme aims to provide training to 500,000 school teachers and school principals to enhance quality of secondary education.

Secondary school teachers will be the direct beneficiary of the project which will subsequently benefit the secondary school students. Youth population will be benefited with foundational skills which will enhance their work productivity and learn new technologies. This means UK HEIs will get better quality secondary school graduates for enrolling in the undergraduate programmes.
