The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) has recently launched Future Skill New Career Thailand, a platform that provides an opportunity for all Thai people to access learning resources from leading universities and develop skills for future changes and careers (upskilling and reskilling). Courses will open later this month in the Thai language, with MHESI covering 90% of the course fees in the first phase to help people who lose their job due to COVID-19. In addition, this platform will show over 10,000 job openings across industries from large companies, companies in the Eastern Economic Corridor area, and start-ups.

The 8 skill sets that will be the focus of this platform are:

• Skills for smart farming
• Skills for carers
• Skills for smart tourism
• Skills for digital data
• Skills for food for the future
• Skills for industrial robotics
• Skills for smart innovative entrepreneurs
• Skills for creative content

These industries are important to the country and will need more labour dedicated to them in the future.

It is likely that MHESI and Thai universities will continue to emphasis these eight areas in the coming years and Thai people will be more aware of the importance of these skills. UK education institutions may receive more enquiries and it might be a chance to coordinate with Thai institutions in these fields. Another opportunity for the Thai market is a short course dedicated to upskilling and reskilling working people.

We have also asked MHESI staff about opportunities for UK universities to get involved in the Future Skill New Career Thailand. Currently, no details are confirmed and we are advised to wait for an announcement of the second phase of this project, which is planned in June or July.
