13 public universities including the five research universities (Universiti Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia) were among the 35 higher education institutions rated as ‘excellent’ in SETARA 2011 (MQA rating system for Higher Education Institutions in Malaysia).

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said that the overall performance of the 52 universities and university colleges in Setara 2011 was satisfactory though no institution managed to get the highest classification which is Tier Six, reports the Star Online
