The number of Singaporean students enrolled on HE programmes in the UK peaked at 8,145 in 2015/16 but has trended downwards each year since. Much of this decline can be attributed to Singapore’s shrinking student age population and increased local university capacity, while Covid-19 accelerated this trend in 2020/21. An uptick in study visa issuance in 2021 and UCAS applications in 2022 suggests a partial recovery in recruitment may be underway. However, the market for TNE in Singapore will remain challenging, owing to factors such as a progressive tightening of regulatory requirements and availability of additional pathways for academic progression from polytechnics to universities.
