Underpinned by healthy levels of government expenditure, France has a world-leading domestic education system, with its higher education system ranked sixth in the world in the 2018 QS Higher Education System Strength rankings. The country plays an influential role both as a host market for international students from other countries and a source of international students, being the world’s fifth largest outbound international student market.

While student flows from France to the UK broadly followed the EU downward trend since the UK left the EU, recent study visa issuance data (which includes both undergraduate and postgraduate study) show some tentative signs of recovery in recruitment from France by UK HEIs.

France has a strong history of research collaboration with the UK, with among other initiatives, the Alliance Hubert Curien joint programme between the governments of France and the UK allowing early career researchers working in eligible fields to apply for a grant to cover reciprocal mobility and collaboration over a 2-year period.
